Tiwa Savage, an Afrobeats singer, has revealed how she struggled to bond with her son, Jamil, after his birth in 2015, admitting she wasn’t thrilled when she discovered he was a boy. Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has revealed how she struggled to bond with her son, Jamil, after his birth in 2015, admitting she wasn’t excited when she found out he was a boy.

In a recent interview with Korty EO, Savage revealed that her desire for a girl, as well as the challenges of postpartum life, such as losing a major campaign deal due to her new appearance, made her feel as if her son had “destroyed” her career.

“Frankly, I didn’t bond with my son for the first year or two. I’ve always wanted a girl. When they told me it was a boy, I burst into tears.

“So, when he arrived, he was constantly crying, and my body didn’t respond. I looked terrible. I was supposed to do a campaign for Pepsi at the time, but they turned me down. And I thought that boy had destroyed me. But now, he’s my best friend,” Savage explained.

According to her, she is also committed to raising Jamil to be a kind and respectful man, advising him to treat women with care and respect based on her own past relationships.

“I always tell him, ‘Your mother suffered too, so treat every girl like a queen. I need to raise him to be a good man. He will make mistakes; he isn’t perfect. But at his core, I want him to be kind,” she explained.

Jamil, who turns ten in July 2025, has become a source of joy for the singer, who is determined to mould him into a good man despite his unavoidable mistakes.
