Femi Kuti: Fela Ought to be Revered Rather Than Compared

Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s son, Femi Kuti, has rejected comparisons to other musicians in favour of honouring his father’s legacy. Femi Kuti, son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has called for respect for his father’s legacy, dismissing comparisons to other artists.

Femi emphasised that Fela is in a class by himself while speaking from Los Angeles, where he will accept Fela’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards.

Femi expressed disappointment over the controversy surrounding the debate between Wizkid and Seun Kuti at the time of the remarks.

In response to Seun Kuti’s criticism of him and his fans for drawing comparisons between the “Ojuelegba” crooner and the Afrobeat icon, Wizkid incited outrage by asserting that he is “bigger” than Fela.

“Fela is our father and all, even the younger artists respect him,” he declared. It is not appropriate to discuss the Fela vs. Wizkid controversy. In Nigeria, Fela serves as the model for both music and art.

Therefore, Fela ought to be placed in his own sector and treated with respect and idolatry. Since Wizkid is like a son to me and Seun is my brother, I don’t want to get involved in their situation. I simply wished it hadn’t come up.
