Francis Odega Laments Decline in Nollywood Film Quality

Veteran actor Francis Odega has criticised Nollywood’s current situation, claiming that the calibre of productions has significantly declined.

In a recent podcast interview, Odega insisted that his active years were part of the industry’s golden age, when creativity and skill were valued.

He contended that modern productions frequently forgo depth in favour of volume, with several films being made from a single screenplay.

In those days, a single screenplay would result in a memorable film. However, it’s wrong that a single script can result in seven subpar films. He claimed that Nollywood in the past was far superior to Nollywood in the present.

The actor, who has worked in the industry for thirty years, emphasised how long he has been involved, pointing out that he was involved before the industry gained widespread recognition.

“I was one of the individuals who created Nollywood.” Nollywood was merely a phenomenon when we first started. Before we changed it to Actors’ Guild, our organisation was known as the Nigerian Actors Guild, or NAG. Nigerian Guild, AGN.

Nollywood arrived after that. I am therefore among Nollywood’s pioneers. “I have thirty years of experience in the film industry,” he said.
