Wunmi Mosaku, a British-Nigerian actress, has received an Academy Award nomination for her role in Ryan Coogler’s vampire drama Sinners, marking a significant milestone in her acting career. British-Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku has secured an Academy Award nomination for her role in Ryan Coogler’s vampire drama Sinners, marking a major milestone in her acting career.

Mosaku was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, competing against Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Sentimental Value, Amy Madigan for Weapons, and Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another.

Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood received an Oscar nomination for his score in One Battle After Another. Greenwood has previously received nominations for his work on Phantom Thread and The Power of the Dog.

Irish actor Paul Mescal, who was expected to receive a nomination for his role in Hamnet, was notably absent in the supporting actor category. The cast includes Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn in One Battle After Another, Jacob Elordi in Frankenstein, Stellan Skarsgard in Sentimental Value, and Delroy Lindo in Sinners.

Despite Mescal’s absence, his co-star Jessie Buckley is a strong contender for a Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of Shakespeare’s wife, Agnes Hathaway. Buckley is widely regarded as the frontrunner, having won multiple major awards, including the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice.

Chloe Zhao, a filmmaker, is also expected to receive several Best Director nominations this year. In 2021, Zhao became the first and second woman of colour to win the Best Director Oscar for Nomadland, making history.

One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a former revolutionary attempting to rescue his teenage daughter, is a strong contender for a Best Picture nomination alongside Hamnet.

DiCaprio is expected to compete for Best Actor with Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, where he plays an ambitious ping pong player, and Wagner Moura for his role in The Secret Agent, a Brazilian drama.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will be held in Hollywood on March 15, with comedian Conan O’Brien hosting. Actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman announced this year’s nominations.
