Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has responded to criticism trailing his latest project, Anikulapo Series 2: The Ghoul Awakens, saying his films are created for viewers who enjoy deep and thoughtful stories.

According to earlier reports, Afolayan responded to the initial reviews that followed the premiere of the new season in a video that was uploaded to his Instagram page on February 10, 2026.

He clarified that he does not anticipate that his filmmaking style will be appreciated or understood by everyone.

He claims that his films are meant for viewers who value narratives that demand focus and critical thought.

The director, who has worked on films like Irapada and The Figurine, recalled how those films received negative reviews upon their initial release.

But as time went on, they became well-known outside of Nigeria and were recognised internationally.

He speculated that responses to Anikulapo Season 2 might take a similar course.

Afolayan also likened the reaction to his series to how viewers follow popular international series like Game of Thrones, where viewers frequently have to wait through multiple episodes before fully comprehending the plot.

He clarified that viewers might need some time to adjust to the new characters and plot points that the new season brings.

He also mentioned that the project has received positive feedback from a large number of academics and serious film enthusiasts.

He acknowledged that not everyone will find the story relatable, but he said he is still grateful to people who appreciate and encourage his artistic direction.

“I don’t make films to please everyone,” he stated. I create films for viewers who are prepared to follow the plot and think carefully. I’ve received criticism for everything from Irapada to The Figurine, but eventually, people started to see the vision.

“Some stories require patience, so you can’t judge a layered story after just one episode. It takes time to see where it’s all going because this season introduces new characters and new directions. I value people who can relate to my storytelling style. It’s okay if not everyone finds it relatable.

Currently, more than 100 countries can stream The Ghoul Awakens on Netflix.
